Abstract

The note considers in its preamble:

  • The high rate of mortality due to invasive pneumococcal disease in children
  • The decreased rate of mortality due to this disease observed in Mozambique after the introduction of PCV-10
  • The change in pneumococcal serotype prevalence after the introduction of PCV-10, the current predominant serotypes not being covered by the vaccine
  • That the conditions for introducing PCV-13 are all present, in accordance with recommendation R03/01/2011 on the introduction of new vaccines

CoPI recommends that the PCV-10 is replaced with the PCV-13 in routine immunization and that a surveillance system is set up to monitor changes in the prevalence of the various serotypes. The committee suggests the following monitoring indicators:

  • The process for obtaining the Gavi grant effectively started by 15 May 2016
  • PCV-13 effectively introduced in routine immunization in 2017
  • A surveillance system specific to the pneumococcus defined by end 2016
