Abstract

The CAVEI responds to the request of the National Immunization Program (PNI) of the Ministry of Health of Chile (MINSAL) received on July 24, 2023 to evaluate the update of the vaccination strategy against COVID-19 for the year 2024, according to with the recommendations of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunizations (SAGE) of the World Health Organization (WHO).

On 28 September 2023, SAGE updated the roadmap on the use of vaccines against COVID-19, considering the predominance of the circulation of the Ómicron variant and its sublineages and the high global population immunity conferred by vaccination, natural infection or both. In this context, the publication of the Plan was announced Strategic Preparedness and Response against COVID-19 for 2023 – 2025, conceived to guide countries in the transition to long-term management of COVID-19, where One of the main approaches is vaccination in at-risk populations to prevent severe illness and death from COVID-19 (1–3).

In this document, CAVEI analyzes the current epidemiological situation of COVID19 in Chile and the world, the SAGE recommendations, the effectiveness of vaccines currently in use in the country, information on new vaccines against COVID-19, among other background.
