Scientific justification of the STIKO for the recommendation of the 2nd COVID-19 booster vaccination with an mRNA vaccine for groups of people who are particularly at risk of health or are exposed

As the Epidemiological Bulletin 7/2022 explains, the STIKO recommends a 2nd booster vaccination (at the earliest 3 months after the 1st booster vaccination) with an mRNA vaccine for ≥ 70-year-old residents cared for in care facilities and for people with immunodeficiency after the COVID-19 basic immunization has been completed and the 1st booster vaccination received. The second booster vaccination is also recommended for those working in medical and nursing facilities, but no earlier than 6 months after the first booster vaccination. In justified individual cases, the second booster vaccination can also be considered after 3 months at the earliest.
