STIKO recommends vaccination against COVID-19 with one of the two approved mRNA vaccines (Comirnaty from BioNTech / Pfizer, COVID-19 Vaccine from Moderna) or one of the two approved vector-based vaccines (Vaxzevria from AstraZeneca, COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen from Janssen-Cilag International). As stated in the Epidemiological Bulletin 19/2021, the vaccines are judged to be equally suitable in terms of individual protection and the fight against the pandemic. The two mRNA vaccines can be used in all age and indication groups for which they are approved.
On the basis of the currently available, but still limited, evidence and taking into account the current pandemic situation, the STIKO, Vaxzevria and COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen should be used for people aged ≥60 years. The use of Vaxzevria for a 1st or 2nd vaccine dose and the COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen as a single vaccination below this age limit remains possible after medical advice and with individual risk acceptance by the person willing to vaccinate.
