This National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) statement reviews the epidemiology of the effect of single-dose childhood varicella vaccination programmes in the United States and the development of varicella vaccination programmes in Canada and the U.S. It outlines the rationale for recommending a two-dose primary vaccination schedule for varicella in children. A systematic literature review summarizing scientific studies on the benefits and limitations of a one- or two-dose varicella vaccination schedule is also included. Surveillance, research and future priorities on the issue are presented.
