Nigeria Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NGI-TAG) Meeting

The Nigeria Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NGI-TAG) Meeting was hold on October 7th and 8th, 2015 in Abuja. Following the inaugural meeting of August 17th, 2015, this meeting aimed at providing members with an overview of the Expanded Program on Immunization  (EPI) in Nigeria, reviewing and agree upon mode of operation and guidelines in the “NGITAG Procedural manual and guidelines” and Commencing drafting of a strategic plan for the next 3 years.



During the meeting, the following thematic areas were covered:

  • Overview of EPI programme in Nigeria: Structure, functions, funding, and challenges
  • Global overview of NITAGs and the establishment of Nigeria Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NGI-TAG)
  • Influence of the Health System on NGI-TAG recommendation
  • Overview of the method for making evidence-based recommendations 
  • Review of the NGI-TAG operating procedures manual (Green book) and strategic plan


The next steps include:

  • Secretariat to revise and consolidate inputs from NGI-TAG members on the Green book and the strategic plan. Based on the strategic plan ,Secretariat to share draft workplan and timeline
  • Organize next workshop for finalization and adoption of strategic plan with costed workplan and timelines
  • Kick-start of activities with working group on the activities as stipulated in the workplan – 2016 including training on evidence-based recommendations methodology

    Workshop training on the methodology of issuing evidence based recommendation in Nigeria


    As part of the activities planned to quick off 2016 work plan, the NGI-TAG through their secretariat, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency has requested SIVAC technical support in organizing a workshop training on the methodology of issuing evidence based recommendation. It took place in the Federal Capital City Abuja from 18th to 19th December 2016 and saw the participation of diverse profiles from the secretariat team as well as some core members. The main purpose of the training was to strengthen the capacity of NGI-TAG secretariat to support NITAG members in developing evidence-based recommendations on immunization related issues.

    The sessions were very participatory and facilitated by SIVAC and the secretariat staff. The topic was covered in six sessions. In addition a special session was devoted to discussion around vaccine prioritisation framework. At the end of the workshop, the NGI-TAG secretariat coordinator, Dr Mahmud acknowledged the relevance of the training and called upon his team on an internal continuous learning process to improve support to vaccine decision making activities within the NGI-TAG.

    The NGI-TAG was inaugurated on the 17th of August, 2015 at the 4th ICC meeting. It was chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Linus Awute.
