This article belongs to the special issue "Evidence base for vaccine introduction in Latin America and the Caribbean" of Vaccine: Volume 31, Supplement 3, 2 July 2013, Pages C33-C44. Pneumococcal disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality associated with significant economic burden for healthcare systems and society. The objective of this article is to systematically review pneumococcal disease cost of illness and productivity loss studies in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. This systematic review reinforced the importance of standardization of methods for cost studies that can allow comparison and reproducibility in other settings. These estimates can be useful for future economic analysis conducted to support the decision making process on the introduction of new vaccines in LAC. However, caution must be taken, as methodological aspects of studies will result in estimates with varying levels of accuracy and external validity.

new Interim Recommendations on Vaccination against Ebola Virus Disease from SAGE

Over the last four weeks, the Ebola outbreak in the Eastern Provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has deteriorated with a large increase in the number of cases1. A major factor in this rise is an increase in critical security incidents that have dramatically affected the ability to identify, follow up and vaccinate contacts successfully. This context challenges the implementation of ring vaccination based on the identification of contacts and contacts of contacts, as recommended by SAGE in April 2017 and confirmed by SAGE during its April 2019 meeting. Further, a potential vaccine shortage may manifest in case the outbreak expands further and/or is prolonged.
