Starting in 2019, pregnant women will be offered vaccination against pertussis. If its mother has been vaccinated, a child will be protected from birth. This means that its first vaccination can be postponed and the number of doses can be reduced from three to two.
The Health Councils Committee on Vaccinations has concluded that this reduced schedule offers most children similar protection against pertussis as well as the other diseases included in the programme. However, certain specific groups are more at risk if the first vaccination is postponed. Therefore, the committee recommends using a different schedule with three doses.

New Recommendation on Pertussis Vaccination for Pregnant Women - December 2015

Current vaccination policy, with the first jab around the age of two months, leaves the youngest infants unprotected against pertussis (whooping cough). Young infants, however, are most vulnerable for the diseases and can even die of it. According to the Health Council of the Netherlands, antibodies from the mother can offer effective and safe protection. To this end, The NITAG of the Netherlands recommend that pregnant women should be offered vaccination against pertussis in the third trimester of pregnancy.
